The Sael Valley

Everything happens in one place: a hidden valley high in the Himalayas, where Nepal gives way to peaks that never made it onto a map. Old as silence, quietly touched by the near future.

The veiled city of Anshara
The Setting · ~2040s

Anshara, the Veiled City

Carved in terraces into the walls of a cloud-filled gorge, Anshara is a city of prayer wheels and suspension bridges, monasteries and lantern light — with a few restrained modern touches: slim solar lamps, an old observatory dome, a small research archive.

It's where the stories begin. When something inexplicable happens in the valley, the file lands on a desk in Anshara — on Mara Venn's desk. The mist here never fully lifts, and neither do the questions.

Home base of the investigation

Places that hold the cases

Each location is tied to a method — and to the kind of person who gets drawn there

Mount Sael
The Sacred Peak

Mount Sael

The single luminous mountain that watches over the valley. Adepts say that those who sit at its shoulder long enough stop noticing where the mind ends and the mountain begins.

Stillness · ego dissolution
The Hollow of Ten Thousand Breaths
The Meditation Cave

The Hollow of Ten Thousand Breaths

Hidden behind a thin waterfall, the Hollow is where the valley's serious practitioners train. The air seems to hum. A single cushion sits at its center, worn smooth by centuries of sitting.

Breath · nervous-system regulation
Pemako village
The Village

Pemako

A terraced farming village clinging to the green hillside below the city. Most of the gifted come from places like this — ordinary people, ordinary chores, an extraordinary stillness folded into both.

Where the gifted come from
Lake Sem, the mirror lake
The Mirror Lake

Lake Sem

A glacial lake so still it erases the horizon. Stare too long and shapes seem to surface beneath the water — memories, the locals insist, that the lake simply holds for you until you're ready.

Emotional processing
The Listening Grove
The Ancient Forest

The Listening Grove

A forest of giant gnarled rhododendrons draped in moss and mist. Sit quietly enough and the grove stops feeling silent — a slow, patient conversation you were simply too loud to hear before.

Sensory awareness

The Stillmind Order

The quiet lineage that ties the valley together

An old lineage, not a religion

For centuries the Order has taught the methods at the root of every “ability” in the valley — treating them as ordinary skills, patiently trained, not gifts from elsewhere.

📜
The Files

The Order keeps records of every unusual case for generations. Mara is the first outsider ever given access — and the first to try to explain them away.

🧘
One rule

“The power is never the point.” To the Order, every dramatic ability is just evidence that someone sat still long enough to meet their own mind.

The Institute — “The Noise”

The force now pressing in on the valley from the outside

📡
A research organization, not a religion

The Meridian Institute studies human potential. Publicly, it wants to end trauma and predict disasters. Privately, it maps the valley's abilities as cognitive weapons — and the locals, hearing only static where stillness used to be, simply call it The Noise.

📊
The Index

Where the Order keeps quiet files, the Institute keeps an Index — every gifted person reduced to a measurement, a use case, a price. Anira's empathy for interrogation. Ren's breath for soldiers. Sonam's instinct for prediction systems.

One creed

“Power is always the point.” The exact inversion of the Order's rule — and the philosophical war the whole season is built on. The danger isn't monsters. It's everything that turns a quiet inner skill into a product.

The people are where it gets personal

Ten figures move through these places — the skeptic, and the nine who can do the impossible.
